Jones Bros converted a contaminated and derelict world war two RAF site in Hawarden Park, Hawarden, North Wales into a commercially useful extension of the existing industrial estate. The client was the Welsh Development Agency and the contract value was £2.6m.
The site bordered a busy local airport, which required constant liaison regarding the height of operating machines and the maintenance of access for emergency vehicles in accordance with the airport’s emergency plan.
The development incorporated features, which enhanced the habitat of the wildlife, which had developed due to the site’s prolonged isolation. “Wildlife corridors” were set aside and landscaped to provide habitat for nesting birds, bats, rare amphibians, water voles and some species of rare plants which had to be trans-located.
