Jones Bros Tywyn Coastal Defence ProjectBackground:Tywyn’s coastal frontage has suffered storm damage in nearly every decade since the 1930s.Over the last 100 years, the height and width of the beach has also receded. It is estimated that 78 homes in Tywyn are at risk of flooding every year. The United Kingdom Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP) and Marine Climate Change Impacts Partnership (MCCIP) predict an increase in storm severity and frequency in coming years. Studies have estimated the residual life of the current defences is from two to five years. Coastal defence:The £6.4m Tywyn Coastal Defence Scheme is backed by £3.8m of Welsh Assembly Government money and £2.6m from the European Regional Development Fund.It will include:
Rock deliveries:Around 60,000 tonnes of rock will be delivered by sea and road to shore up Tywyn’s sea defences. The majority of this rock will come from nearby Penmaenmawr, the rest will come from France and Norway. Two-thirds of the rock will be delivered by sea.
