Tywyn’s picturesque beach has been fully re-opened in time for the August bank holiday weekend.

The beach was closed off to the public earlier this year as part of the £6.4m coastal defence scheme being carried out by civil engineering firm Jones Bros, and has been re-opened gradually in sections since then.

The permanent re-opening of the final strip of shoreline comes as the vital scheme to protect the seaside town from flooding nears completion.

Jones Bros project engineer Dafydd Elis said he was delighted that the popular beach will be open for ‘business as usual’ during one of the busiest weekends in the seaside town’s calendar.

He said: “It has been a real race against the clock to get the final section of the beach open again for the bank holiday but we’re delighted to have done it.

“We would like to thank the people of Tywyn for their patience and support over the past few months. Hopefully we will be rewarded with some sunshine over the weekend!”

While the beach itself is now fully open for locals and tourists to enjoy, the Warwick Place slipway remains closed and is due to re-open in mid September.

Ruthin-based Jones Bros was appointed by Gwynedd Council to carry out the scheme, which is being funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Regional Development Fund.
