A Ruthin firm which built a key £2 million road link in North Wales, as part of the £7m Parc Cybi infrastructrue scheme, was at the centre of celebrations surrounding its official opening by Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones.
 
The new road linking Junction 2 of the A55 expressway with the B4545 between Holyhead and Trearddur Bay, will open up access to the award-winning Parc Cybi, a £31m business and residential development on a 120 acre site at Anglesey.
 
Jones Bros won the Welsh Assembly Government contract to build all the infrastructure. The company has also built a road through the middle of the development, installed drainage systems, utility services and a new bridge overpass.
 
Up to 50 employees of the Ruthin-based family owned firm have been working on site since December 2006, including civil engineers, plant operators and mechanics.  
Mr Ieuan Wyn Jones, who is also the Welsh Assembly Government’s Minister for Economy and Transport, said: “Given the turbulent economic climate, it is great news that Ynys Môn and north-west Wales are being equipped with first-class infrastructure.
 
“This is a huge step forward in ensuring Parc Cybi is fully ready for business. It is an ambitious scheme – which has the potential to provide employment for up to 1,300 people.”
 
Jones Bros saved on vehicle movement costs by recycling 20,000 tonnes of materials excavated during the construction process. In all 91 per cent of material used on the road was quarried on site, saving 198,500 lorry miles or 13,600 lorry movements on B4545 and the local road network.
 
It won them recognition from the Institute of Civil Engineers for their approaches to sustainability, with the development being awarded an excellent rating for the institute’s prestigious CEEQUAL award.
 
Work will continue on the remainder of Parc Cybi after further archaeological excavations have been completed. Jones Bros has shared the development site with a team of up to 45 archaeologists who have unearthed artefacts dating back centuries.
 
Jones Bros project manager, Hefin Lloyd-Davies, said the opening of the link road was a key step forward for Parc Cybi and North Wales as a whole.
