A5 Rock Cutting Remedial Works

Jones Bros undertakes regular contracts with local authorities and national highways bodies.

We were appointed by the Welsh Assembly Government to design and implement remedial works to make safe the north face of a rock cutting on the A5 in North Wales.

Failures in the rock anchors meant that for safety reasons the road had to be closed and the traffic diverted along the old A5 Glyn Bends.

The most cost-effective solution was to cut the north face back to a calculated stable angle with some re-anchoring to the south face. 225,000 tonnes of rock and soil was blasted and removed from the site. The rock was utilised as recycled aggregate and the soil has been used to restore part of the Moel Y Faen quarry on the Horseshoe Pass to heather moor land.

The contract value was £4.5m and the project was completed ahead of schedule.
